In case you couldn’t tell from yesterday’s post, I’ve been feeling a bit jaded about the state of the breakfast sandwich. Now nearly three weeks into our month-long September Sunrise Sandwich Spree, I’m ready to confess that finding a new, interesting sandwich to feature each morning has been more difficult than I expected. I deserve more than a little of the blame for this—admittedly, my research and planning efforts have been lackluster—but the general lack of ambition and creativity among breakfast sandwich purveyors has been apparent. Regardless, I needed my faith restored, and today’s entry, the waffle sandwich with egg, bacon and provolone from Wicked Waffle, did just that. In concept, it’s everything a breakfast sandwich should be: unique, whimsical, evocative of childhood. And while the execution might leave a bit to be desired—the pre-made components tend to lack crispness and texture—it tastes pretty good, too. In fairness to Wicked Waffle, this is the type of breakfast best enjoyed at home, early on a Saturday when you’ve got no plans. You’ll use every dish in your kitchen and afterwards you’ll let leave them stacked up in the sink while you bask in the lingering aromas for a few hours. Or, in the considerably less romantic scenario, you’ll leave for work five minutes early on a Tuesday, hope you don’t get rained on, and swing through Farragut on your way to the office. It won’t be quite the same, of course, but trust me: You could do a lot worse.
