Of the countless global interpretations of the Western-style sandwich, the Mexican torta is among my absolute favorites. And although it would also seem to be one of the most ripe for conversion to breakfast form, examples of the kind are elusive; a Google search for “breakfast torta” returns no local results, only listings for a couple Chicago taquerias and a handful of recipes. And so this morning I headed to Adams Morgan taco joint Pica Taco, which offers an extensive selection of lunch and dinner tortas, to attempt for the first time in my life a stunt requiring considerable tact and near complete shamelessness: ordering off the menu. As you have probably inferred from the title of this post, I was not successful. Although not quite a sandwich according to the terms previously defined on this site, the breakfast burrito, stuffed with two scrambled eggs, tomato, onion, black beans, cilantro and cheese, and by default the nineteenth entry in our month-long September Sunrise Sandwich Spree, made for a more than adequate Plan B. But it sadly wasn’t the most interesting component of today’s breakfast. The burrito and coffee being insufficient to satisfy the restaurant’s $7 credit card minimum, I found myself seated at a curbside table at 7:15 a.m., drinking an imported lime soda of a glowing green color recalling the beaker of nuclear fluid from the opening sequence of “The Simpsons.” And to think, just days ago I bemoaned the abuse my body was suffering.
