Lox is a food I’ve never developed much of a taste for. But given that those who enjoy it seem to do so with such fervor, I’m committed to giving it a fair shot. As such, the bagel and lox spread from Bethesda Bagels, the fourth entry in our September Sunrise Sandwich Spree, is likely not the last fish sandwich I’ll sample this month. Although this is not, strictly speaking, a traditional presentation, the intense saltiness and smokiness that I’ve previously found overwhelming in lox comes through the cream cheese-based spread, which came piled high atop one of Bethesda Bagel’s rightfully renowned toasted plain bagels. Ordering the sandwich unadorned and without any additional fixings might have been a mistake, in retrospect, as a little contrast in texture and flavor might have help cut the richness of the spread. Final verdict? My ambivalence for today’s sandwich is almost certainly due to my own disinclination towards lox, so take everything in today’s entry with a big, briny grain of salt. Lox lovers, let me know in the comments why I’m a tasteless idiot. (Or just be nice and tell me where to go next.)

While I AM a lox fan, I can’t handle an entire portion of the lox spread given to me by Bethesda Bagels, either. (And I’m not the only one I’ve seen smearing a wad of cream cheese into the trash — some of their employees have a heavy hand with the spreader!)

Devon & Blakely has surprisingly good bagels, and their lox spread is just plain cream cheese with small bits of lox mixed it. Barely salty! I go to the location on F Street between 13th & 14th, but I’m sure their other locations have it too.

Thanks for reading, Lindsey! Everyone tells me I don’t like lox because I haven’t gotten “the good stuff,” yet nobody seems to know where to find it. I’ll have to try Devon & Blakely. Thanks for the tip!
