Ten Thirty-Five |

Not yet two full weeks into the September Sunrise Sandwich Spree, I’m starting to question whether my body can withstand a full month of this. Nonetheless, essentially daring my heart to continue beating, I’ve continued to select the most horrendously unhealthy menus item available, and Open City‘s Ten Thirty-Five, the eleventh entry in our month-long spree, is no exception. A quarter-pound hamburger, ham, fried egg and cheddar cheese on an English muffin with a side of hash browns, the equally delicious and guilt-inducing Ten Thirty-Five has provoked questions not only about the sustainability of this little stunt of mine, but more broadly about the general state of the breakfast meal in our culture. Gluttonous one-upsmanship seems to be the norm; more, bigger and greasier is trending. For Christ’s sake, I ate a sandwich over the weekend that featured both scrambled and fried eggs. If it’s true breakfast is the most important meal of the day, why is it slowly killing us? This is not to specifically disparage Open City, which is one of my favorite breakfast spots in D.C. and whose menu offers no shortage of wholesome, less artery-clogging items. Rather, it seems assumed at this point that healthy breakfast food is necessarily boring, and creativity is limited to how much and which types of meat, cheese and egg can be loaded onto a single plate. But I’m not giving up, but I am accepting recommendation for a good cleansing regimen.

If you’re going to eat like that, breakfast is the best time to do it . . . you’ve got a whole day to burn it off. Thanks for the Open City update, btw. Love that place.
